Monarchists cling to sentiment and misinformation

Earlier this week, we had a conversation about whether it's time for Canada to sever ties with the Monarchy. Recent opinion polls suggest two-thirds of Canadians would be willing to do so following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. I guess Canadians aren't too fond of the idea of King Chuck.

Some still cling to fond memories of the past.

I spoke with representatives from the Monarchist League of Canada and Citizens for a Canadian Republic. The spokesman for the Monarchist League wasn't very convincing, suggesting that without a monarchy Canada would adopt an Americanized health care system that would see most people go without public coverage. Seriously.

The MLC rep also recalled being outside London's Buckingham Palace in 1945 on V-E Day, at the end of World War II, basking in the presence of King George VI and Winston Churchill. I'm not making light of the moment, it was a fantastic time in our history. It's hardly an argument to cling to an institution that most people perceive as one of elitist privilege.

Cutting ties is not a move that most Canadians take lightly. But the time for Canada to assert it's Independence from the British monarchy is long overdue.

We are our own country! The Statute of Westminster (1931) and the Constitution Act (1982) made us our own country. May I remind everyone that Queen Elizabeth 2 holds Canadian citizenship and she is the Queen of Canada! She is not some foreign ruler and she is not the Queen of England to us; she is the Queen of Canada to us. I'm sorry she has 15 other countries to attend to and she can't always be here in Canada; you can't blame her for that either, she wasn't the one to colonize all those places.

I believe it would be a great adult step for Canada to take. Imagine being our own country.
