Chill Out Mr. Edmonton Mayor

Edmonton’s mayor has his knickers in a knot over an unflattering viral image that is raging across Twitter like a virtual wildfire.
The photo posted on Twitter by pop sensation Lady Gaga before a weekend concert in Edmonton. In order to place a spotlight, the stage crew removed the second letter ‘o’ from the upper ring that states, “This is Oil Country.”
Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel isn’t impressed. He’s calling it a poor joke that reflects badly on the entertainer.
“Some things are disgusting and you shouldn’t have to say they’re disgusting,” he said.
“ I think it demeans them more than anything else.”
Um, yeah. I’m sure that’s the way Lady Gaga’s fans see it too Stephen.
It’s a low-brow attempt at humour. But I doubt anyone thinks any less of Edmonton (or at least any less than they already might have.)

Does Athabasca water study miss the mark?

Critics are quick to dismiss a new study that blames Alberta’s oilsands development for higher levels of toxic pollutants found in the Athabasca River.
The study concludes oilsands projects are to blame for higher levels of toxic pollutants, especially mercury, found in the Athabasca River. One of the study’s researchers, Peter Hodson at Queen’s University tried to convince me that while levels of some toxins are still within federal guidelines, higher mercury levels in the Athabasca River are a concern. I agree, but he’s not exactly sure where the mercury is coming from. He assumes it’s because of oilsands development, which he refers to as tarsands (and that should be a hint as to what his agenda is.)
How fair or accurate is that assumption? The Athabasca River isn’t the only waterway in this province that has high mercury levels. So where is this stuff coming from? Some of it ...
