Bohnert at the Bearspaw

There's something magical about seeing raw river water raging into a huge concrete tank, and watching it being tamed into a cool quiet glass of drinking water.    On the May 14th edition- The Calgary Files - Blue Gold -takes you inside the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant to find out where our drinking water comes from. Ask ten Calgarians on the street and most have some idea of the souce of our city's water. The Bow...the Glenmore...the Elbow....some answers more vague then others and quite a few...simply not sure. Most don't really know what exactly the city does to our water, before it comes out of the tap. But it is serious business.   Soon after the terrorist fears spawned by 9/11 most water treatment plants were deemed by governments to be critical infrastructure. Calgary's water treatment plants are no different. No we don't have armed guards patrolling the perimeter, but all public tours were cancelled. You may also have noticed some new off limits zones around the Glenmore Reservoir.  So be sure to join me for a walk through of the Bearspaw plant with the Manager of Water Treatment there Dan Limacher. It's not all top secret by the way. You can take a virtual our...

Will that be tapped or bottled?

The kick off on May 7th to the  " Blue Gold " documentary series was a first for the Calgary Files.....a LIVE in studio edition.  And the results of our informal water tasting test are in....       Nestle Pure Life and Dasani bottled waters deemed by the panel to taste better....with tap water filtered through a Brita Jug the pick over tapwater from my home. The reason, the apparent chlorine taste of the tapwater.          Not surprising results in my opinion, which is that Calgary drinking water is among the best in the country.  I still like it, and no I don't see any reason to change. We have safe clean drinking water. There are a number of other issues surrounding bottled water. More on this in future blogs.       Do you drink bottled water over tap water? And why? What's wrong with good old cold, clear Calgary tapwater? Do you have one of those hi tech filter systems at home? What's your reason to spend money doing what the city has already done? I look forward to what you have to say!   My thanks to the panel of Calgary Today Host Mike Blanchard, Ward 13 Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart and World Tonight Producer Laura Whitle. As well to U of...

Got a good idea for a documentary?
Posted 3/21/2008 6:00:00 AM
"The Calgary Files" return in late April! Here's your chance to get your ideas on where the documentary series should go next, on the editorial dartboard. If your theme or topic is a winner, then you could be a contributor on the first show to kick off the new series. Maybe your story will  "be"  the documentary. Going Green the most recent documentarty series which aired earlier this year should be available soon in the archives, along with past shows, as we rebuild our new website, so check back here often.  Watch for more on my own personal report card on Going Green at home, along with blogs on the Curbside Recycling issue, the program that will be run by the city without any private recycling firms, who are now talking about compensation for being put out of business by the city.  Curbside Recycling is flying lower on the City Hall radar these days, after rehashing that issue, council is rehashing the West LRT and dealing with the dustup over the C Train crime stat numbers which city transit bosses say they will now make available to all of us. Makes you wonder if the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" culture...
