POWER'S PEOPLE
WEEK OF MAY 11TH, 2008
This was almost the week that wasn't for a golfer who had yet to tee it up this season but wanted to catch up a bit in a hurry by booking three times. Had a playing lesson set for Tuesday at McKenzie Meadows with Scott Orban the director of golf. The plan was four or five hours with a pro, a tip here another there and then a swing into action with the idea of lowering a handicap that grew considerably toward the end of last season. It didn't happen due to dropping temperatures but it may be for the best. Last time we did it Scotty's final words were for me to take two weeks away from golf and then quit the game.

WEEK OF MAY 4TH, 2008
Last week in this space we talked about sports bars in the city and the money they were losing with the Calgary Flames out of the Stanley Cup party in the first round. But how many remember the first real sports bar in Calgary? We must go back many years for this one and a pretty good story it is.

WEEK OF APRIL 27TH
It was with a heavy heart that we learned of the death this week of good friend and junior’s hockey’s greatest supporter and Ambassador Ed Chynoweth. Eddie, as I called him, lost a lengthy battle with cancer but he will live forever in the eyes of the junior game in our country, and the United States for that matter. But I thought it was neat that a former co-worker of Ed’s brought up the bright rather than the negative of the situation. Western Hockey League vice-president Richard Doerksen recalling the time that as head of the Canadian Hockey League, Eddie had the opportunity of presenting the Memorial Cup to none other than son Dean of the winning Medicine Hat Tigers. It was one of the proudest moments in a life of proud moments for one fine individual. Our condolences go out to Dean, his brother Jeff and Ed’s wife Linda. Funeral services will be held on May 5 at 2 p.m. At the First Alliance Church at 12345-40th St. S.E.

The Calgary golf scene about to be improved in a big time way with a huge facility under construction just south of the city one hopefully not delayed by this stupid snow that’s extending winter much too far.. This will be the Oasis Greens Golf Center, as own by Art McKenna, who already has the Calgary Family centre in the northwest section of the city.

WEEK OF APRIL 13TH
This is one that I tried to confirm last night but couldn't make any contact but it will be good news, if it’s true, for minor football in our city. I have it on pretty good authority that the Alberta government is about to step up big time in support of minor football in our city. How much the province is coughing up I don't know but I'm told that with that money, what the city has already guaranteed plus donations from the private sector, our young bantams, midgets, high school and others will be playing on field turf before the end of the year. Two fields can be done in short order with a third to follow down the line. This is big time news because it means fewer injuries to the youngsters and little chance of cancellation due to the weather.

WEEK OF APRIL 6TH, 2008
Rules, some say, are made to be broken and methinks one has to be broken and in short order. This is rule two for selection to the McMahon Stadium Wall of Fame that states: Only players that played with the Calgary Stampeders for five or more years are eligible. You might remember the name of Doug Flutie maybe the most talented player to ever wear the Red and White jersey. Well he only played with the Stamps for four years, not enough for a spot on the wall.
