It would cost the Calgary Parking Authority $96,000 extra per year to monitor fare evaders, if transit users were allowed to back into parking stalls at LRT lots.
The city's transportation boss says a review of fare evasion at Calgary's LRT parking lots has found alot of people are illegally backing into the stalls deliberately to avoid a ticket.
John Hubble says general evasion is low, about 2.6 per cent, but much higher among backed-in vehicles.
"Of those backed in, it's 14 per cent," Hubble said. "There are some people backing in for the purpose of evading detection."
The issue was brought up by Calgary Ald. Brian Pincott who wondered if the cost would outweigh the safety benefits of allowing drivers to back into a stall or pull through.
