City council has approved spending $350,000 on a graffiti abatement program, $200,000 of which will come from the city's "rainy day fund."
The program helps private landowners who are victimized by damage from graffiti and currently have to pay for the clean up themselves or face fines from the city.
Alderman John Mar was hoping to have a program worth $750,000, but he came up $400, 000 short in the battle against graffiti.
Mar pointed to the recent anti-Semitic graffiti that the city should help private landowners who are targeted and not left to fend for themselves.
"What I would like to do is make sure that property owners who are victimized, that are experiencing vandals, particularly symbols of hate have some recourse."
Council voted to add $200,000 from the city's rainy day fund, which had $150,000 left over from last year since the graffiti abatement program didn't get underway until late in the year.
