A new study from the U of C is calling for a more efficient way to manage cataract surgery in the province.
The author says it may be the start of a fundamental change in how healthcare is handled in the province.
U of C professor Dave Dranove wants the province to appoint a gatekeeper to oversee cataract surgeries in Alberta.
Surgeons would then submit bids to the gatekeeper in an auction to provide their services.
Dranove says to ensure patients are still getting good quality care, the surgeons would be financially responsible if there were any complications with the surgeries.
He says this would be a major improvement over the current system.
