Labour Day Classic

The annual Labour Day Classic is upon us.  This year's edition features a different background than previous editions.  In other years, the Eskimos and Stamps have often been duelling for top spot in the West.  This year, the Eskimos have had a monumental struggle in the first half, while the Stampeders are on top of the league.  However, the team have put on some memorable shows in the long history of this rivalry.

Here are a few highlights, from my vantage point

The most dominating individual performance came in 1995.  Jeff Garcia, thrust into starting duty because of Doug Flutie's elbow surgery, threw for over 500 yards and six touchdowns in a Stamps win over the Eskimos.  Until that point, Garcia was not well known to Stampeder fans.  That performance ensured his place in Stampeder fans hearts.

Stampeder safety, Wes Lysack, said something the other day that caught my attention. He noted the difference between the best and worst teams in the CFL this season is not very big. Fans will be looking ahead to the two game series between the 7-1 Stampeders and the 2-6 Edmonton Eskimos and they will remember the score the last time these two clubs played in mid August (56-15 Calgary) and they will begin to vibrate with the anticipation of another rout. And I say to you, hold the phone for just a moment.



The Eskimos much maligned defense took a step forward Saturday night against a very good Saskatchewan Roughrider team. The Green and Gold limited the Riders to 258 yards of net offense. 258 yards!
