It’s been twelve years since the last back-to-back winners of the Grey Cup. The Toronto Argonauts beat Edmonton 43-37 in 1996 and came back a year later to defeat Saskatchewan 47-23. Since then seven different teams have claimed the ultimate prize in Canadian football, including the Calgary Stampeders who won it twice: 2001 and again last season.
Last Sunday’s Stampeder loss in the west final means a new champion this season. Perhaps it will be Saskatchewan, which won it all, two years ago, only to lose out in the west semi-final in 2008. More likely it will be Montreal, which knows all about how difficult it is to win one championship at a time, let alone a string of consecutive victories. This will be Montreal’s sixth trip to the Cup this decade. The Alouettes have just one win in 2002 to show for their efforts.
