This is Bookmarks, an online program created by AM770 CHQR to promote books.

In this early incarnation, launched in June of 2009, Bookmarks is beginning to explore the wealth of the written word which is a part of our lives.   True, writers often find their efforts carried on appliances like iPhones and Kindle...and you might be one of the people who purchases a book on-line, rather than in store.  Regardless, you are reading what others write.  It's what makes Bookmarks work.

About Gary Freeman

Gary is a long time broadcaster whose intimacy with books goes back to his childhood (he still has his first 'book', a copy of Captain Kangaroo 'Stories to Read Aloud' (1958 - Wonder Books) which his parents gave him to read on a long trip to St. Louis so he'd shut up).
He spent many years interviewing authors On Air and has returned to craft after several years for this unique program.  He welcomes your comments, observations and advice.

What I'm Reading Right Now

I want to enjoy this.  I won't.  I have grown to like a certain style of writing.  It's not terse like Hemingway, nor verbose like Mervyn Peake.  It's rolling around in the middle...and Zimmern isn't there for me.

His Television show is a staple of mine.  But let's be honest he doesn't write like he lives.

Here's the thing that irks me.  The book is filled with repeated observations.  On occasion Andrew Zimmern relates the same observation he's already made.  He just repackages the observation and you get a full page on 'one thing' said in different ways.  And so it goes.  I loved doing that in High School.  Repeating stuff filled a thousand word essay the night before due date.  But not now, and not in this book.  I'll finish it..because it's not that bad.  Still, if you want something a little less Bizarre hunt down one of Jeffrey Steingarten's efforts.
