On the wall of the Calgary Stampeder dressing room is a sign that reads in part: "Rookies are to be seen and not heard." It was put up by equipment manager George Hopkins several years ago, taken down at the request of former head coach Tom Higgins, but replaced with the arrival of John Hufnagel. I witnessed firsthand the treatment the veterans gave the rookies last year when having a coolie with a few of the guys. The rookies are put through the grind to say the least and had better not complain. They learn from experience. But I go back even further in the treatment of rookies having once been asked to coach the Calgary Flames in what was an annual slow-pitch tournament in Niagara Falls. We had split our first two games and needed a 19 run Saturday afternoon win over Winnipeg's Jets to make the Sunday playoff run.

Only Darryl Sutter could steal the spotlight from The Greatest Show On Earth, the Calgary Stampede and he did it a big way this week with the signing of controversial still Todd Bertuzzi. The reaction, to say the least, was amazing as it knocked the Stampede off the front pages and onto the backburners of local sportscasts on both radio and television with Calgary’s Flames taking top spot.

To be honest even as big a Calgary Stampeder booster as I’ve been more almost half a century I was just hoping the new look club would be close on Thursday night, at least be competitive. What I, we, saw was more than just a bit impressive.
